book cover Caro's Book of Poker Tells This book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about reading your opponent. It covers everything from betting habits, to subtle changes in behavior, to seemingly nonchalant table talk. There is almost too much information; you can't possibly process it all after reading it just once. I would recommend skimming through the book trying to pick out the main points, and then go back to it on occasion as you notice some tendencies in the people you play with. My only complaint is that the pictures in the book look like they were taken in the 1970s so it makes the book look dated, but all in all I would definitely recommend this book.
book cover Poker Nation: A High-Stakes, Low-Life Adventure into the Heart of a Gambling Country Poker Nation takes you into the world of professional poker. Andy Bellin recounts tales of his life as a poker player, as well as the stories of other famous players. Must read for any poker fan.
book cover Positively Fifth Street Jim McManus was supposed to cover the World Series of Poker for a magazine article. Follow him as he instead, enters the tournament and ends up at the final table. Some of the background information and stories that McManus provides can be a bit dull, but the excitement of the play by play action in the main event of the World Series more than makes up for it. book cover Doyle Brunson's Super System Doyle Brunson has won the World Series of Poker twice. This book outlines many of his strategies. Recommended for more advanced players, this is a must have for anyone serious about poker.
book cover Doyle Brunson's Super System II The much anticipated sequal to Brunson's Super/System features updated sections for changes in today's game. Includes contributions by many of the top poker pros including Johnny Chan, Mike Caro, and Daniel Negreanu.
book cover Championship no-limit and pot-limit hold'em : on the road to the World Series of Poker This has been called the bible of pot limit and no limit poker. Author T.J. Cloutier is one of the top all time money winners at the World Series, and Jim McManus, author of Positively Fifth Street, credits this book with helping him to make the final table of the 1998 World Series of Poker.
book cover Play Poker Like the Pros Phil Hellmuth Jr. is a seven time World Champion of Poker and will teach you how to play like him. He explains popular varieties including Hold'em, Omaha and Seven Card Stud. He also classifies common playing styles that you will find in your opponents, and how to beat them.
book cover Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions Ok, so technically this isn't about poker, but I would still highly recommend it. Bringing Down the House chronicles the M.I.T. blackjack teams and how they took Vegas for millions of dollars. Check out my blog for a more detailed review.
book cover Chance: A Guide to Gambling, Love, the Stock Market and Just About Everything Else Chance is not really a poker book, but it is an interesting read for anyone curious about probability theory, which should include most poker players. Amir Aczel does a nice job of teaching the reader the fundamentals of probability without being overly complicated or boring. It’s worth checking out for a change of pace from your usual poker books.
